A mild and sweet onion which can be pulled young as a “spring” type – especially if you like a good-sized bulb on them.
Or, for left to mature as small onions which are ideal for pickling or using whole in casseroles. Crops are quick to grow and are a good source of vitamin C.
Sow & Grow:
Sow indoors: for surest results, March-April, 0.5cm(1/4in) deep, thinly in small trays of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20oC(60-68oF) is ideal.
Seedlings usually appear in 14-18 days. Transplant seedlings individually to 8cm(3in) pots when large enough to handle. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 30cm(1ft) apart.
Sow outdoors: for ease, May-June, where they are to crop, 0.5cm(1/4in) deep directly into finely prepared soil which has already been watered. Thin seedlings to 30cm(1ft) apart. April-November.
